Once you’ve decided which grill to choose, you will want to find the right accessories. Being unprepared to grill out means you will waste time and effort. Before you even turn on the gas, plug in the electric grill, or fire up the charcoal, take a little time to invest in the right outdoor cooking accessories.
Thermometer
An easy to use meat thermometer is a must for cooking out. Don’t trust a visual inspection of meat to tell you whether it is done to perfection, especially if you are cooking in the dark. The last thing you want is to give your guests food poisoning, so invest in a sturdy, easy-to-read meat thermometer and know the appropriate doneness temperature for all the meats you will be cooking.
Tongs
Using tongs lets you move food around on the grill without piercing it. Piercing meat with a fork can allow it to dry out, and tongs allow for a better grip on foods. Tongs allow you to keep a safe distance from the cooking surface, which is always a plus.
Cleaner
Check the specifications on your grill for the appropriate cleaning method. Porcelain coated steel, for instance, requires special cleaning to avoid scratches. Chrome will rust easily and requires rust removal to keep the grill in top shape. Thoroughly cleaning your grill will keep it in good working order and will help it last longer.
Safety Gear
Make sure you have some basic safe cooking gear before you get started. This means long, heat-resistant gloves, a sturdy apron, and something with which to keep your hair out of the grill. You want to follow the same hygiene standards you would for cooking indoors, and that means dressing appropriately (loose sleeves can catch fire, for instance) and being careful around flame.
Other accessories
Your grill may have a smoker box or additional burners aside from the standard grilling surface. If so, be sure you know how to use these before you get started cooking. You don’t want to have to learn this on the fly while your guests are waiting to be served.
You don’t have to memorize every word of the instructions that come with your grill or purchase every expensive, and sometimes unnecessary, accessory on the market. Keep it simple and keep it safe and you will have a successful grilling experience.
